CHiPs Art by Fireball Tim

Good morning, you ROWDY ROH ROH’S and welcome to AUTOMOTIVE POP CULTURE!! As Fireball creates NEW AUTOPOP SKETCHES this week, let’s keep the tires rollin’ with his take on Ponch’s KAWASAKI from CHiPs!! Probably the most Iconic Bike in TV History!

DID YOU KNOW?? The iconic television show CHiPs (1977-1983) featured Kawasaki KZ900 and KZ1000 Police motorcycles, reflecting the actual shift by the California Highway Patrol toward Japanese bikes in the 1970s. These, often called “KZP” models, were renowned for their reliability, speed (approx. 130 mph), and, in the show, were often modified to be quieter to not drown out dialogue. While Kawasaki Police Specials were the standard, many stunt bikes were used, and a total of about 40 were reportedly destroyed during the show’s run. Ouchy… In many scenes, especially close-ups or during stunts, stunt doubles rode the motorcycles because Erik Estrada (Ponch) was not allowed to perform the high-speed maneuvers himself.
